Chosen Generation Africa Empowers Vulnerable Youth

Chosen Generation Africa’s mission statement is “to empower and uplift vulnerable children and youth, fostering social development, physical well-being, and spiritual nourishment. Through comprehensive support, community engagement, and collaborative efforts, we aspire to create a positive impact on their lives, cultivate resilience, and enable them to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world at large.”

Founder Peace Terrien was inspired to begin the non-profit seven years ago because of her personal experiences. She lost her mother to HIV/AIDS and also personally witnessed the vulnerability of children in the slums of Uganda in 2006. “It became evident that proactive efforts could bring about meaningful change,” says Terrien. “Witnessing the urgent need for support in areas such as HIV/AIDS, mentorship, and education, the desire to contribute to the well-being of communities, particularly those in urban slums, fueled the inception of our programs.”

Currently, Chosen Generation Africa operates in Uganda, focusing on HIV/AIDS initiatives and mentorship for urban slum kids and youth. Although recently registered in the USA, the organization has yet to initiate projects stateside. As of 2024, their efforts have positively influenced approximately 2000 individuals.

Plans for the future include expanding the HIV/AIDS initiatives, mentorship programs, and sponsorship initiatives. The HIV/AIDS initiatives will focus on identifying and supporting individuals who have dropped out of care, enhancing adherence to medication regimens, and collaborating with healthcare providers to offer counseling and support services. Additionally, community awareness campaigns will be conducted to educate about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and to provide access to testing and counseling services.

The mentorship programs aim to empower youth in urban slums by connecting them with experienced mentors for guidance on personal development, education, and career guidance, fostering a supportive community to build resilience and confidence. The sponsorship programs will support the education and well-being of underprivileged children and youth by providing financial assistance for school fees and supplies and by connecting sponsors with individuals to foster mutual support.

Terrien points to one of the proudest moments in the organization’s history as a testament to what is possible. Two problematic boys in the community, Charles and Joseph, went through the mentorship program. “…these young individuals underwent a remarkable journey of personal development. Today, not only have Charles and Joseph become responsible fathers, but they have also taken charge of their lives by establishing their businesses. This success story is a testament to the power of mentorship and community support in catalyzing positive change. It highlights the profound impact our program can have on individuals, steering them away from challenges and towards a future of self-sufficiency and contribution to the community.”

One of the organization’s biggest challenges is addressing the issue of school dropouts in Uganda, which often occurs because of the lack of school funds. It will become increasingly difficult to support the local children and teens without their involvement in the educational opportunities in the community.

Through its dedicated efforts, Chosen Generation Africa continues to empower vulnerable children and youth, striving for a future where every individual can thrive and contribute to a more equitable and compassionate society.
