The African Academy for Education and Development Builds Brighter Futures In Cameroon
Cameroon is a country full of creative, resilient, hopeful people, many of whom face challenges of poverty and lack of resources and education. Patrick Manfo Paguem’s mother, Denise Tchangui, worked hard to enrich her community and improve their lifestyles. “She spent her life working on initiatives that addressed basic human needs in rural areas, such as the access to education, the access to medical treatment for all, the creation of health care centers, and access to clean water and the increase in crop production…” says Manfo Paguem. After her death, Manfo Paguem wanted to continue her legacy and mission by starting the Tchangui Bilingual School Group.
The school group, which is under the African Academy for Education and Development, is on a mission to improve lives in Cameroon by addressing the needs of children, women, and the elderly—the most vulnerable groups in society. Starting with children’s education, the academy has embraced the challenge of nurturing young minds in a nation where 42% of the population is under the age of 14. This initiative is vital in a country where economic hardships persist, with 23% of the workforce living below the poverty line.
The academy’s approach is rooted in patience and perseverance, focusing on equipping students with tools to tackle present and future challenges. Its vision extends beyond the classroom: as students practice and share their knowledge, they will then create positive change in their own communities. In fact, in just two years, the school has expanded significantly. Word-of-mouth from parents whose children attend has been the main source of enrollment growth. Many students who once struggled academically have transformed into high achievers, even learning new languages like English, French, and Italian.
The Tchangui Bilingual School Group has big plans for the future, including adding a middle and high school and eventually establishing a university. In order to make these a reality, infrastructure projects need to be completed, including building science and computer labs, a sports center, a playground, and a modern kitchen. This is where the need for funds is crucial for the expansion of the organization.
Through dedication and community support, the African Academy for Education and Development is laying the groundwork for a brighter future in Cameroon, one small step at a time.
