Integrity-Adhering consistently to moral and ethical principles, being open and honest in all of our dealings.

Sustainability–Supporting long-term stability while optimizing the triple bottom line of economic, environmental, and social good.

Excellence–Striving to be exceptionally good in all areas.

Servant Leadership–Putting the needs of those we lead before our own.

Organizational History

HSI-Founding-Board-Members

March 1, 2014 – Founding Board Members L to R: Mike Planer, Paul Hodges, Anthony Rentschler, Linda Rentschler, Kayla Maneval, John Ott

In 2014, Linda Rentschler was an administrator at The King’s Academy in Mohrsville, Pennsylvania, and pursuing advanced degrees at Lehigh University. Two TKA graduates, Paul Hodges and Mike Planer, visited her and shared their vision for starting a nonprofit: an organization that would provide solar panels for schools in developing nations. They found the process of starting a nonprofit to be difficult and expensive. Linda agreed to advise and support them through the process. On the way home from an expensive and unproductive meeting with a lawyer, they realized the need for an easier way to make a humanitarian impact.

Linda searched for business models to solve this problem, and she chose fiscal sponsorship for the new organization after reading Gregory Colvin’s Fiscal Sponsorship: 6 Ways to Do It Right. Linda resigned from her job and created Humanitarian Social Innovations with a founding board of five members. Paul and Mike created the first program under HSI, Solar for Academics. Since then, HSI has grown to sponsor many programs that serve a variety of humanitarian missions both in the US and abroad.
