Amethyst Allies Keeps Families And Their Pets Together

When Trudi Froehlich decided to flee her abusive marriage with her children, one of her greatest concerns was what would happen to their pets. “I could not imagine how my children would cope [with] such a change without their best friends who had comforted them so many times,” she said. Fortunately, she had a coworker who was able to help find boarding for their animals, and then later, an organization helped put her and her children into a hotel that allowed pets while they searched for housing.

However, this is not the case for most families who want to leave unsafe environments. In fact, people often won’t leave abusive relationships because they do not want to abandon their pets, or they don’t know how they will be able to take care of the animals while they are transitioning into new housing and getting back on their feet.

This reality, plus her own experience, is what led Froehlich to begin Amethyst Allies. Their mission is “to improve the lives of survivors of abuse by creating a network that allows families and individuals to reunite with their pets after establishing safety and housing. We act with empathy and compassion towards families while focusing on the wellbeing of the animals entrusted to us by housing these pets within a network of veterinary facilities,” says Froehlich.

The organization hopes to help at least 100 families every year in the Lehigh Valley, Berks, Bucks, and Chester counties of Pennsylvania. Froehlich is a licensed nurse at a veterinary clinic, and she plans to network within the vet community to help secure kennels and facilities. “I plan to make gift baskets with pamphlets explaining the community need for my program,” says Froehlich. “I plan to fundraise with galas and have tables at community events…”

With their animal companions by their side, people can heal better and have an improved quality of life. Amethyst Allies is all about keeping families together through a difficult and dangerous time in their lives. “The human-animal bond and link between human and animal violence is undeniable,” says Froehlich. “I know
that [families] will have a better chance if they do not need to leave their pets behind.”
